Be the Heroine | Maxine

Posted on: June 3rd, 2015 by Kate Perry

When I was a kid, I couldn’t figure out what I wanted to be: a mermaid or a bird.

There were pros and cons to both of them, right? Like, if I were a mermaid, I’d get to wear iridescent shells and frolic with dolphins, but I wouldn’t get to go dancing. And think of the seaweed tangled in my hair! Quel horreur.

The thing about being a bird was that not all birds were created equal. Being a peacock? Awesome. Being a pigeon? Not so much.

Not that it made any difference. I was just me.

But the beauty of being me was that I could be a mermaid anytime I wanted. All I had to do was jump into water and I was transformed. Undulating, exalting, and graceful. Joyous.

As for being a bird… Well, I can’t fly–yet. I keep working on it, though. With Big Bird as my spirit animal, I can’t fail.

Kate’s Note:
Today’s #BeTheHeroine story was inspired by Maxine, who’s a writer and illustrator. Her first book, Mermaids: the Coloring Book (Volume 1), is a cross between a story book and a coloring book, about mermaids. It’s lovely–check it out. You can also meet Maxine at the Bay Area Book Festival this weekend 😉
