Be the Heroine | Mehry

It started four years ago.

She walked down the street, looking into the shop windows. Instead of seeing the goodies inside, all she could think was Now what?

She was at a loss. She needed to express herself somehow—it was her time. She thought about all the things she’d done in the past: cooking, sewing, doing vegetable art… But, while she loved them, none of those hobbies were a passion.

Now what?

And then she saw the store.

She stopped in the window and looked inside. Beyond the glass, there were beads—a world of colorful stones. It was a treasure chest waiting to be plundered.

Her gaze caught on one strand.

Striding in, she picked that strand and took it directly to the register. “I would like these.”

“Okay,” the storeowner said, starting to ring her up.

She looked at the precious beads in her hand. “What do I do with them?”

The storeowner looked up in surprise. Then she said, “I can teach you how to make a necklace.”

Her heart expanded with a feeling of rightness, and she smiled. “I’d like that very much.”

This week’s heroine is inspired by my mom, Mehry Elmi. She crafts her jewelry with love.
