Lone Star State of Mind

It’s Monday afternoon. I’m sitting on a flight to San Antonio, where this year’s National Romance Writers conference is taking place. I’ve got my sparkly boots on and am ready to rock this week.

I’m traveling with Sara Ramsey, Regency author extraordinaire and dear friend. She worked for the first hour and a half of the flight, but now she’s doing the crossword puzzle in the airline magazine. Her nails are a deep fuchsia that match her pen. Sara is always put together. I’m wearing a T-shirt that says “STAY WEIRD.”

On my earbuds, Live just came on, with “All Over You.” That song always reminds me of my friend Scott. It’s been so long since I’ve seen him–I wonder how he’s doing. The pitfall of traveling a lot: not seeing your friends.

I want to ask the flight attendant if she has a steak hiding somewhere in her cabinets. Or ice cream. Instead I pull out my small Evian sprayer and spritz myself. And then I spritz Sara, startling her with the cold mist. Years ago I discovered it as the secret to staying fresh on flights. Try it.

Tomorrow: the Alamo! Or maybe I’ll just lay by the pool and read. San Antonio waits with limitless possibilities.
